Canadian Pacific Cajon Pass Travelogue
Author: TheNavigator

Today’s BNSF symbol BOIGSCO (Baretable Oakland Intermodal Gateway to Thenard, Calif. in the LA Harbor area) was led by CP ES44AC #8856 followed by BNSF 8272. It’s a rare thing to see CP power on the Cajon Sub, let alone leading and not ratty, so this was worth a chase. Thanks to a tip from FCP901 and later DRGW, Mike RSD5 and I headed out to Barstow this morning and then along the Mojave Sub to intercept.

At 8:30 just west of Hinkley we found our subject and so turned around to wait for it on the Cajon Sub west of Barstow. The weather was on our side for once as we were able to chase to several locations up toward Summit and then down the west side of Cajon to San Bernardino. Here’s a selection of a few of the locations and shots from today’s productive outing. (Sorry for the overkill on one train, but this could likely be a non-recurring event.)

Thanks for looking,
GK

1. After changing crews at Jewell (west of Barstow near Lenwood on the Cajon Sub), our train was on the move just before 11:00. This is from the bluff next to the Hinkley Road grade crossing.

2. Between Helendale and Oro Grande.

3. Approaching the lower narrows between Oro Grande and Victorville.

4 more to follow.

5. South (RR west) of Hesperia.

6. At Summit.

It's a fairly clean looking CP unit. You were lucky.

Gary,
Glad it worked out. Don't think I remember a CP unit on the point in Cajon Pass before. You covered it well!

Sweet! Great chase you guys had! Like Paul said, don't think I've ever seen a CP leading in Cajon, no less on the BNSF.

Did you use a drone for any of those?

Hope the BNSF crews are enjoying our new units. I'll be sitting in the DM&E ones dying of heat stroke.
