Of course the big question is how can the skilled workers in China taint the crew packs with lead like they've done with kids toys and other things...

The lead is on the chopsticks in the pack!

Guess you can't buy American anymore! Makes you wonder where the water comes from that you're drinking!

Ah well, it all comes out in the end.

You can. My company works in design and manufacturing. Everything we have ever designed can (and if we have much to say about it, is) made in America. But, the company doing the product(s) has the final say and they will answer to their stockholders and execs, who want to squeeze every last penny out.

If you don't like a company's practices in that area, say something, especially if you are a shareholder and can get other to chime in. Frankly, I imagine the crew packs are such a small expense, someone at BNSF probably hasn't considered the alternatives.

A lot of our clients are coming back on-shore, or at least to North America, due to various issues in China.

My new Lincoln MKZ was built in Mexico and shipped to Michigan for final inspection. That tells you something.

This all reminds me of Ross Parot's Giant Sucking Sound in the 1992 presidential debates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkgx1C_S6ls

A recent PBS Newshour segment included the point about asparagus grown in South America is flown to China for cleaning and packaging, then flown to California for sale at the local supermarket chain.

Take out the band-aid and the garbage bag and you have a UP crew pack, made in China!

"Assume transportation costs approach zero". Transportation has become so efficient that its costs are an insignificant component of the total final delivered cost for anything with a decent value per pound. (Grain isn't worth much per pound, neither is coal, so they're different.)

Container ships, jumbo jet freighters, stack trains, etc. They're so efficient they literally make transportation costs on many items insignificant.

We just got a new shipment of crew packs in at West Colton and they've put the trash bags back in, not sure about the bandaids though. The black trash bags make good window tints!-BMT

Most of the computers used for writing these comments, and the screens used to view them, and the keyboards used to write them, are made in China or elsewhere in Asia.

[Except my trusty 10-pound IBM Model M keyboard, made in 1984 in the U S of A!] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_M_keyboard

The water is still bottled in Kansas City, KS from the municipal water supply...or at least that's what they print on the bottle!
