2014 KC trip - A few from Day 1
Author: oyw

This years trip to the midwest was another good one. Not keeping with a certain plan, flexibility was the key in allowing us to run from stormy weather while also helping to find new locations. Myself, along with TO member JWS departed early Saturday morning, October 4 from Ontario, CA for Kansas City. Our trio was complete when we changed planes in Denver and were joined by SP8595 (son of JWS) for the rest of the flight. Even though I call it the "Kansas City trip", little time was spent there due to a belt of bad weather that drove us north to Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. But less than an hour after landing, we decided to make a bee-line for BNSF's St Joe line near Kansas City prior to heading north.

1) Minutes after takeoff from Ontario, the sun rises over the Inland Empire.

2) Not far from the KC airport over on the St Joe line near Weston, MO, the action began quickly with two manifests meeting at Sadler. We found a farm crossing for BNSF 5064 and colorful CITX 6001 on the westbound.

3) Once the 5064 cleared, another colorful lashup beneath the same tree as Citirail 1422 and BNSF 4629 are underway to KC. Not a bad start so far.

...one more part to follow

4) We began to follow the line north but quickly turned around for a shot of BNSF 8759 and 8358 on a coal load at Sadler.

5) Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, our next train was a coal empty with clean KCS GE 4597 and nearly new BNSF ACe 8565. Looking for better sun angle, we raced north of St Joseph to Nodaway for our final train photo of the day.

6) Looking at the upcoming weather, a decision was made to head for Iowa. After dinner at Cameron, MO we made it as far as Ottumwa, IA for the night. Pausing somewhere along I-35, the sky several minutes after sundown.

A long day but off to a pretty good start, with many more surprises to come...thanks for looking and please stay tuned.

Number 4 is poster for the BNSF. They should use it for a promotion for their business. Coal...Power lines... Grain. It tells a story of the industry.

Not to mention that basically just out of the frame to the left is Kansas City Power & Light's Iatan (Eye-Uh-Tan) Power Station, a BNSF customer, receiving train loads of KCLX gons daily.

It isn't very hard to do right now along the BNSF. There is so much variety on that part of the BNSF system, your bound to roll up on something decent.
