Heavy Windmill blades roll across the KP:}
Author: SP8595

This morning, a heavy Windmill blade train that required eight engines traveled East out of Denver on Union Pacific's KP line. Just kidding of course:}
Actually the train SMKESW-20 (Special-Milliken, CO-E. St. Louis-Wind) was so light, that only the lead engine was on-line and running! The train stats are 66 loads-2594 tons and 6853 ft.
The lead six engines-UP 8389, 9113, 9764, 8327, 4938 and 3875 are all to be setout at Sharon Springs, KS for use on Grain trains. Leaving the rear 2 engines-UP 3928 and 8589 to continue on to the East side of Missouri with the train.

1)Rolling into Watkins.

2)From the overpass at Strasburg. If you look closely, you can see the heat from the exhaust only coming out of the lead engine.

3)Heading through the last of the Fall colors at Byers.

One motor online with the other 7 along for the ride? Don't guess I have ever seen something like that before, though I don't think they could get away with that on Tehachapi ;-)

Great series, really like your angles in shots 1 and 2.

In pic 2, what is the purpose of the guy-wired pole structure just behind the train?

UP would make a crew set out the HEAD units on a train.

A great series of photos! This train originated on the Great Western Rly at Windsor, CO and interchanged to the UP at Milliken, CO yesterday afternoon about 4:30. Most of those units had been sitting in Windsor for a couple days...I guess the UP wanted them back! The train made quite a sight rolling down the GWR's less-than-ideal trackage.

Engines get towed along for the ride all the time, very common. I had a UP ACE the other day, only engine on an 11,000 ton train, it was 8 and sand going up the hill just to hold 14mph but it pulled the hell outta that train.

It was only about a 10 mile transfer job but it did it's part without fail

Might be a corner pole or a turn but it don't look like it. Really don't know. upkpfan

Looks like it is a pair electric transmission poles with guy wires on both sides of each. You can see them in this Google map link, but it looks like there is a picture seam there so one of the poles shows up twice.

Great stuff.

Not sure why they had set all 8 up on the Great Western but who knows...

More proof that EMD can make a good product.

Awesome to hear that. Now if you could only tell the people at CSX, CN, and CP that. Maybe they would finally order some of the ACes.
