Western Railroad Discussion > GP60Ms with a New backdrop in Azusa, CA...

With the work crews for the LA MTA Gold Line Foothill Extension seeming to have moved on from San Gabriel Avenue in Azusa, I decided to set up for a shot of today's westbound BNSF Pasadena Local. It came through at a predictable time, with a trio of GP60Ms (in 3 different schemes) hauling a short train of 2 tank cars. The catenary poles for the Gold Line and the Target store can be seen to the left of the train. Power was 105, 130, and 122.

About 5 minutes before the train came through, a middle-age pedestrian crossed over to my side of the street and approached me while I was standing on the sidewalk sizing up the scene through the viewfinder. As he passed he warned me 'You know what you're doing there by taking pictures...is technically terrorism'. I replied 'Not if I'm on public property'. He sighed and exclaimed 'It don't matter', and I answered 'It sure does!' as he walked away. Maybe he didn't like me taking pictures of the shiny new Gold Line infrastructure and figured I was up to no good. And I guess it's not a free country anymore, at least to him.

I would have told him it's not terrorism even if you are on private property. It might be trespassing, but it dang sure isn't terrorism.

Now back to business - might fine shots of my favorite locomotive model!

Revenue run on this line with only two tank cars can't bring a lot of money for BNSF. What revenue the RR does accrue has to be further eroded by the fact they sent three units to move it!

..........even if they were lined up to pull, let's say, 60 outbound loads out of the same plant the two tanks were ordered into? And then there's the switching charges. Sometime we can look at a photo of a train and not see the "whole" picture.

The loads in and out vary a bit every day. The Friday outbound train often has a lot of empties heading for Kaiser (and Barstow), while Monday or Tuesday's inbound train can be quite big (15-20 cars) heading for Miller-Coors in Irwindale.

How much does UP move to/from the brewery?

I think my response would have been, "You're an idiot."

understand that the BNSF has a corporate responsibility to Miller-Coors due to
another small facility in Golden Colorado.

Nice view and thanks for the updates. Is the depot building still in place or was it removed during this construction/will it become a commute platform?

Thanks for the kind words everyone - and the ideas of what to say if I see that guy again.

The old Santa Fe Azusa station is still in place, right behind the palm tree in the distance.

The new Gold Line platforms are directly across from (north of) the depot , which will be restored at some point in the future.

And you should see all the boxcars they leave in Pomona! 3 units indeed...

Sadly, many in this nation are actively pursuing a life of delusional thinking. Even the government can't come up with some of this stuff....

Anyway, the GP60M was the apex of EMD's rugged and timeless 4-axle hood unit styling. They look great in any paint scheme, although the war bonnet is clearly tops.
