Western Railroad Discussion > UP paint schemesDate: 10/24/14 15:43 UP paint schemes Author: MEKoch Today in Berea, OH two UP units led an eb oil train. Both of these units have some age - more than 10 years old. I noticed the shading of the color. The lead unit is a different yellow than the 2nd unit. Is it faded? Or did UP slightly change their yellow color? Or??
Thank you. Date: 10/24/14 19:29 Re: UP paint schemes Author: billyiii Noticed that too. Seams to me the C60ACs and the C4460ACs are the only ones that have the Lighter shade

Any paint that has red in its mix (orange, yellow, pink, maroon, etc.) will fade in the sun over time. The quality and the brand of paint may make a difference over time too. environmentally friendly paint!! Mike Date: 10/24/14 20:33 Re: UP paint schemes Author: MartyBernard 2720 Wrote:

Makes sense. Marty Bernard Date: 10/24/14 21:04 Re: UP paint schemes Author: SantaFe9820 It's kind of along the same lines as BNSF's aging SD70MACs and other "Heritage II" painted power.. some were painted by a different contractor and therefore used different brand, and thereby quality, paint. An example that comes to mind is the early run on MACs painted by VMV seem to have lasted longer than the MACs painted elsewhere.
On another note, sweet shot! Love that AC6000 Date: 10/24/14 21:09 Re: UP paint schemes Author: junctiontower I don't want to speak for anyone, but I believe he was just pointing out the fact that certain paints, like so many other products that have been reformulated to be environmentally friendly don't work nearly as well as as the products they replaced. I guess that is the price of progress, but sometimes I have to wonder if the cure isn't worse than the affliction.

Date: 10/24/14 21:47 Re: UP paint schemes Author: Notch16 The "afflictions" are cancer, COPD, asthma, bronchitis, systemic toxicity and early death. Fading paint sucks big time. But I hate the first list worse. As well as any argument that says removing toxins is pointless, or nothing more that a frivolous or politicized shell game. It may be imperfect and even corrupt or foolish at times. I miss good lacquers, sprayable paints with fragrant VOCs, and stable reds, oranges and yellows as much as anyone. But lung death is worse.

I have used both kinds of paints and gotten differing results, also there is one EMD and one GE in the photo, painted at two different locations! Using In Stock paint supplies. Mike Date: 10/24/14 21:56 Re: UP paint schemes Author: kwo Hey Marty, where are they painting power in Nebraska? Paint booth at North Platte was shut down YEARS ago. Just curious, don't think they are. Maybe the good people of Nebraska do care about air quality.

Considering that NLR is the only heavy maintenance shop on the UP. It makes sense. Date: 10/24/14 23:37 Re: UP paint schemes Author: wesleygreer Needless to say, some of the AC4460's, such as UP 7078, were originally painted by GE in a slightly different color than the rest of the fleet. Nothing faded about it.
Date: 10/25/14 00:30 Re: UP paint schemes Author: aronco Did anyone consider that the locos were probably painted in a paint booth to control emissions? Ranting and raving about air pollution is silly if there was no pollution caused.
