Western Railroad Discussion > Early Bird Gets the WormDate: 10/29/14 16:21 Early Bird Gets the Worm Author: FrontRangeTrains This morning, myself and my friend Jerry Sharp left Longmont this morning around 6am and headed over to BNSF's Brush Subdivision that runs northeast out of Denver to Sterling, CO. Once we arrived into the small town of Hudson, we got on the road that parallels the tracks from Hudson to Roggen. After passing through Keenesburg, we noticed a dimmed light ahead and then soon realized it was an eastbound coal empty. We caught up to the train and then heard the dispatcher call a BNSF 9775 East (the one we caught up to) and told them that a Lincoln - Denver was out of Wiggins and will meet them at Roggen. The sun didn't rise yet so we raced to the crossing east of Roggen. Moments after the sun rose over the horizon, the Lincoln - Denver showed up at the top of the hill going towards Crest. After getting shots here, we raced back into town and went to the crossing at the west end in time for the meet. Since the crew on the manifest was reaching their hours of service, they had to cut the crossing and tie the train down. Once the manifest cleared the east switch, the coal empty got the light to head east. Once the empty went by, we headed west towards Keenesburg to try and get the eastbound Z-Train. We got to the cut west of town and waited. We heard the dispatcher talk to a BNSF 6036 at Tampa (oil loading facility east of Keenesburg), and told him that he had the Z-Train at Irondale. After waiting for a few minutes, we heard a horn to the west and noticed it was a coal empty. After that went by, we over heard that the Z-Train was at Hudson and a coal empty was at Irondale. Once we got the Z-Train, we headed east to Tampa and waited for the coal empty. We also noticed the oil train that was ready to depart. Once the coal empty went by we raced back over to Roggen to hear that the oil train went into emergency trying to pull up to the signal at CP 5019 (East Tampa). According to the crew, it was something regarding the DPU. Eventually, it was fixed and the train headed east towards Brush and beyond towards McCook, NE to its destination. After the oil train cleared, nothing was gonna move for a while due to a track rider getting track and time and a work window down by Barr Lake.
============================================================================================================= 1) Just after sunrise, two C44-9W's, a GP38-2, and SD40-2 lead BNSF's Lincoln, NE to Denver, CO manifest east of Roggen. 2) In Roggen, the same manifest pulls up towards the west end of the siding so they can cut the train and clear the crossing before tying it down. 3) The coal empty waits west of the crossing as the manifest pulls west. Once again your photos number 4&9 exhibit your awesome ability to locate such scenery to frame your world class photos in. Now if they were UP I would say you should enter them in next year's convention photo contest in Omaha.
