Yea, right. Railroads and oil companies are really going to go for running 30 car, 4,000 ton oil trains.

Their idea is not to make transport of oil safer...it's to make it more expensive.

Shorter trains consume more energy and emit more pollutants, which sounds about right for CBD's idea of "logic."

The environmentalists, and Tom Steyer in particular, got a shellacking in the last elections. Although Steyer spent a train load of money opposing US coal, opposing the Keystone XL, etc his candidates lost across the board. Steyer's hypocrisy (opposing US coal and Canadian oil while benefiting from investments in Australian coal) didn't help.

the current effort is to make crude oil and coal use a health hazard. And a biological diversity argument fits that mold perfectly.

I noticed they used the words "...and other hazardous liquids". That is a direct dig at the proposed liquid propane and butane terminals at the Port of Portland and the Port of Longview, all which would arrive by rail from what I understand.

They MIGHT win on coal, but they won't on crude oil. There's too much money at stake and American crude oil is now being used as an international bargaining chip. The Obama administration might be "anti-Keystone XL" but they haven't exactly stopped other new pipelines/reversels and the growth of crude oil production. In fact they have been very quiet on the subject (other than KXL).

Condensate, which can be shipped by rail, is another crude derived product that will probably increase in volume. Several export permits have been issued, although others are on hold.
