Hopper in UP wreck
Author: pmack

There is a 4 bay hopper in the third photo in the thread about the Feather River wreck:

Here is a similar car if not the same, I think the number is 221411 it was upside down and hard to read:

What is the history of the car? Manufacturer? 4 bay cars like that don't seem too common, most are 3 bay.

Could that be a former Western Pacific car? There's a U.P. herald on it....

We see four bay hoppers daily here and it appears that ADM prefers them.

The car in question is a 4-bay 5250 cu ft hopper from UP class CH-125-2 or -3 built by Pullman-Standard in 1968 through 1970. Many were rebuilt/refurbished by UP in the 1990s and placed into the 221400-222549 group (not continuous). Western Pacific never obtained 4-bay ribbed side covered hoppers with that capacity.

Original series:
UP 23600-23849, Lot 9388, class CH-125-2, Dec-68 to Apr-69
UP 221100-221399, Lot 9436, class CH-125-3, Feb-70
UP 222000-222199, Lot 9436, class CH-125-3, Feb-Mar 1970
