Generous Rains Coming to California
Author: kansas1

With the drought, there have been few opportunities to shoot California train photos in rain or snow. That is going to change over the next two weeks with multiple opportunities for substantial precipitation. Details are here. http://meteorologicalmusings.blogspot.com/2014/11/california-14-day-rainfall-outlook.html

Good luck!!

"If this forecast is correct, it will significantly dent the drought."

Sorry, 7-9 inches will be a dent, but by far not a significant one.

Bring it on! Rain gear is in the car, that little 90 min teaser over LA County on Halloween night seems like such a long time ago!

Work rain gear or the railroad is shut down account no crews rain gear? Have fun no matter how it shakes out.

Actually, it will be quite a significant "dent."

I have attached a map of California climatological divisions that show how much rain is needed, in addition to normal, to break the drought. Over a good part of the state that amount is 9 to 12 inches (in the Sierra it is more).

San Francisco averages about 24" of rain a year. So, if 7 inches were to fall over two weeks, it would be 29% of normal. A very good start.

As to what may or may not occur beyond the next two weeks, I would not hazard a guess.

Mike

Probability in SoCal? Zero.

Consider that it's the weatherman that's talking, same group forecasting the world
ending floods from the Buffalo lake effects snow event.

7-9 inches spread out over a month - VERY GOOD.
7-9 inches spread out over 2 days - NOT GOOD.
