Short lived Detroit Diesel loco on the UP.
Author: glord

Caught this Republic rebuild in switching service at Council Bluffs IA in late 1980,s. Don,t know if any more were built but I heard this one burned up on the UP or SP in trials.

I keep thinking it caught fire on the SP around Carson, CA in the mid 90s.

I think this one qualifies on Evan Werkema's ugliest locomotives on the planet archives. It helps that it's not a GE. :-)

It still lives. It was in Newton,KS. about 7 years ago. I posted shots sitting in the yard.

Is this the same motor? Both shots were taken on the trackage of the Burlington Junction RR in Burlington Iowa. Markings were for Larry's Truck .... First one was on 23 June 2009, second was 2 March 2010.

Regards,
Burlington John

Yeah, that is one ugly critter. Was on the UP in 1993, then sent to the SP.

I read that it is now at Bethel, Minnesota.

Don Strack's Utah Rails site has some info on it in the UP rosters, and there are some photos on RR Pictures Archives, including some taken last year in Minnesota.

Larry's Truck markings are LTEX, not LETX.

I remember seeing it at North Yard in Denver in the early/mid 90s. Probably 1993 or 1994.

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: You know, I'm a rather brilliant surgeon. Perhaps I can help you with that hump.

Igor: What hump?

Back when it must have been travelling around the west, I saw it sitting dead at the BNSF Murray yard in North KC.

That's what I always say about CF7s, and I always get a load of crap for it. Just another case of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. ;-)
