UP Nampa, Idaho Yard - Old Engines Today
Author: philhoov

Drove out to the UP Nampa yard this afternoon to see what was stirring.
Not much except a long apparently empty grainer pulling out eastbound as I arrived.
The yard was pretty empty.
But, I did find these two old engines sitting all alone at the west end of the yard.
#9237 is an old C40-8 that appears to have been repainted and perhaps overhauled?
I found photos on another site (starts with "RR") from 2006 and it looked pretty beat up back then.
Probably benefitted from UP's power shortage because there's not a single engine sitting in the dead line in Nampa now.
I think I remember this unit sitting in the two mile-long dead lines a few years ago in Nampa.
Also found #351 sitting nearby.
The cab lettering says it's a GP-38 2L ~ what's that?

That ex-MOP 4 stack, non-db unit is pretty cool, remember seeing those in the South in the
early eighties.

Out

GP38-2L
"L" "Liberated" (?) Referring to the exhaust system. (4 stacks instead of 2)

How does the lease situation work?
Who is leasing it ~ UP?

The MOP tried that 4 stack exhaust on lots of engines going back as far as GP-7's and most of them pumped oil bad because of no back pressure. You would find oil all over them.

UP 351 is owned by Helm, and is on it's way to Motive Power in Boise, ID to become a maroon colored HLCX unit numbered in the 1800s. It is in a long term lease to the UP.

Yes, that's the site.
Didn't think it was allowed to mention it on TO?

Interesting how the fuel tank has a big ding in it.
Wonder how that happened?
