Rail grinders are delightful! That's a rare catch, as rails only need grinding every few years, and so there are only a few rail grinders in the country.

Loram has 17 grinders currently working in the US.

Great grinding weather: no fire risk.

At night they look like hell fire with all the sparks shooting out. They are also used for brush clearing sometimes, in Eastern WA they used it to remove old buildings one time. Water isn't always close enough on the rear to do the job.

Actually, under today's maintenance practices a heavy main line may get its rails ground 2 or 3 times per year.
