Im sure its some dirty dirt thing but Ive never seen them like this.

Out Date: 03/04/15 16:27 Re: Whats the story on all the covered gondola cars Author: 494 Not necessarily related to the derailment, these trains often originate on Sunday nights out of Vancouver & run South on the Brooklyn Sub Monday morning. This timing would put them through Dunsmuir overnight, which is why the camera & Bob aren't catching them...apparently in this case the Cascade Sub derailment set the train back.
