Western Railroad Discussion > new power for a Oregon shortline "fresh" in St LouisDate: 03/04/15 05:49 new power for a Oregon shortline "fresh" in St Louis Author: stlrailfan List,
sharing a few photos of the newest engine to join the roster of the Albany Eastern Railroad. The AERC operates a series of branchline trackage in the Lebanon Oregon area. This is a new addition joining 5 EMD's currently on there roster. Not to common in this era of motive power to see a shortline pick up a high horsepower 2nd generation General Electric unit. Pictured fresh out of the paint shop at Metro East Industries in East St Louis, IL is Albany Eastern B40-8 # 1841. Built in July 1988 as SSW/Cotton Belt # 8041 to Union Pacific # 5650 to UP # 1841 retired and sold at auction in 2013. Taken on private property with both the permission of MEI and Albany Eastern Railroad. Mark Mautner Maryland Heights, MO Date: 03/04/15 05:58 Re: new power for a Oregon shortline "fresh" in St Loui Author: mojaveflyer Nice shots but it looks like it needs something on the nose... It will be interesting to see how long it lasts. The reliability of older GEs is not what older EMDs seem to enjoy.

The Cimarron Valley based at Satanta, Ks has an ex LMX unit, B39 I believe. I need to get photos of it sometime when it is functional and out working. It works with a group of former DRGW GP30s. Brian Stevens Date: 03/04/15 08:39 Re: new power for a Oregon shortline "fresh" in St Loui Author: asheldrake Great pictures and catch.....many of us here in Oregon really appreciate Albany & Eastern and Rick Franklin owner. Three of our Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation partner organizations currently have passenger rail cars on lease to him for his passenger operations, Santiam Excursions. Rick has helped ORHF a GREAT deal and is considered a strong ORHF friend and supporter.

There painted in RF Corp colors but are used in the AERC operations frequently. Larry Dodgion Wilsonville, OR Date: 03/04/15 09:36 Re: new power for a Oregon shortline "fresh" in St Loui Author: stlrailfan Larry,
thanks for the correction, but in looking for info it only shows 5 EMD's on the Albany Eastern Roster. 2 GP9's , a GP35 and 2 GP38's. Not being familiar with the area being 2,000 miles away I would have no way to know they are using Rick Franklin's B23-7's. Appreciate the correction. Mark Edited 1 time(s). I wouldn't have thought that the B-40s would be a long-lived model.

(2) EMD GP-38 2001 and 2002. I believe one is a -3 and the other is an AC model. I don't recall which is which. They are painted AERC yellow and green, currently on lease to Central Oregon and Pacific (CORP). (2) GE B23-7 4201 and 4202. These are painted in Rick Franklin Corp. (RFRX) Orange, Silver and Black. (1) EMD GP-35 2501. Painted in the Yellow and Green AERC. This is the regular engine for the run to Mill City due to having remote control capability. (1) EMD SD9 5399. Purchased from Lavacot Locomotive Works in Independence, OR. Painted in the SP Black Widow modified with silver trucks. (1) EMD GP9 1750. Used on the remaining portion of the former SP Bailey branch south of Corvallis, OR. Used as needed to move cars between the small Corvallis Yard and the grain loading facility about five miles south of the yard. 1750 is equipped for remote control operation. 1750 is painted in Orange and Black similar to 4202/4201 without the RFC logo on the side of the locomotive. (1) GE B39-8 1807. Purchased about six months ago. Currently painted in Union Pacific Yellow with UP lettering lined out in black. 1807 will travel to St. Louis to receive the same treatment as 1841 after 1841 arrives on the property. (1) GE B40-8 1841. Aaron Zorko Engineer for AERC Date: 03/05/15 09:00 Re: new power for a Oregon shortline "fresh" in St Loui Author: cjvrr I like it!
Odd how they painted over the number boards on the hind end. Guess they won't be lit? Date: 03/05/15 09:11 Re: new power for a Oregon shortline "fresh" in St Loui Author: ble692 cjvrr Wrote:

Not that it couldn't be changed, but as a SSW and UP unit it never actually had number boards in the back. It was an option the didn't SP want, so the spot was filled in and painted over.
