ex-BN GP30 in its Last Days
Author: bnsfsd70

The BNSF 2824 came out of LaGrange in 1963 as the CB&Q #974, and seven years later it became the BN 2251.  Following its rebuild by MK in the early 90's, it emerged as the 2824 along with a fresh coat of Cascade Green and a snazzy white face.  Unfortunately, it was recently outshopped by Topeka, which means that it will likely receive a coat of H3 paint in the near future.

As a BN fan and one who loves the white face scheme, each one of these to go makes me a bit sad, but as we all know, the only constant is change and there aren't too many 52 year old units getting rebuilt for Class 1's these days, so... bring on the H3!

Going to RELCO for paint.

Ironic.  Next planned update for my BN Tribute website is going to be the BN 2251 which as you say was rebuilt to BN 2824 and is currently the BNSF 2824.  Note the small BN herald on the nose compared to the larger ones on most repaints.

Also note the GP35 door.

Yeah, that's where most of these have gone to, with a handful to Mid-America as well.  Is this getting the full GP39-3 rebuild treatment?

Yeah, those new bulked up doors have been standard for these outshopped Geeps from Topeka.  It certainly makes maintenance easier to only have to stock one EMD door.

Well, there ya go!  Now you can have some pretty updated info for this one!

I noticed the smaller nose logo as well.  Do you have any idea how or why this one came out with the non-standard logo?  Was it an early repaint, possibly?

Thanks,
Jeff

Will be nice to see some photos of it in fresh paint!

As for the small logo I believe the unit was damaged in a collision with a truck before 1991 as I have a photo of the BN 2824 in Seattle on 4-30-91 with the small BN herald on the nose.  Odds are when repaired BN used a herald normally used on the cab side on the nose.

Bye,bye BN green, hello, H-whatever.  At least it will still  look like a GP30.

Good call! That sure does look to be the same size as the cab side logo.
