Ronda Thomas Date: 04/04/15 07:48 Re: Downey on the Oregon Short Line Author: SF5953 Nice work getting a couple of trains on the Ogden sub. Nice to see a couple SD60 in use. My wife a few years ago had a seminar up in Logan so we had a motel up their. I was excited I was going to photograph the Ogden sub while she attended the seminar. I ended up spending 12 hour track side over 2 days without a train. So I appreciate your shots. Also great shots of your locomotives and the museum.

I hope it's getting moved, it's such a great looking depot. Reminds me of the one in Nampa for some reason. Once caught two trains in one day on the Ogden sub. Often had to wait while the crew popped into the Swan Lake Mercantile for groceries. The northbound stop at Downey was probably a wait to get authority on to the OSL. Dispatchers used to kick southbounds out, only for them to wait around Red Rocks until the sub dispatcher could get to them.

Date: 04/05/15 10:09 Re: Downey on the Oregon Short Line Author: HogheadMike Great pictures. Love this part of the country. (I work out of Pocatello myself) Just a heads up though, its actually the Utah Northern origionally. Back when the OSL from Granger and the UN were both in existence, they actually shared track with dual guage. At one time the dual guage ran from Mccammon to Pocatello with the OSL being standard guage and the UN being 3 foot narrow guage. At Pocatello the UN continued north to Garrison, Montana on today's Montana Sub, while the OSL followed west to Huntington, Oregon on the present day Nampa sub. Eventually both railroads became part of the UP system obviously. The wierd thing about the official merger though is that the OSL still existed as a separate entity on paper until it was finally merged into the Union Pacific in 1987.

I see on Don Strack's website that Utah Northern was officially consolidated into the OSL in 1889. There's also a photo on Wikipedia showing an Idaho roadside historical marker about the Utah Northern, so will have to go check that out sometime. |
