Three miles of bad road and no trains!

Tues afternoon I decided to check out the Garnet area on the Caliente Sub just northeast of Sin City. The road into the area took a bad beating in last years flood so it was slow going in my Suburban. Sure enough, I spent about 2 hours out there and not a single train!

1 & 2. The lonely intermediate signal between Garnet and Dry Lake. Just like me, standing out in the desert with nothing important to do.

3. I've always liked the geology of this mountain range. It makes an awesome backdrop for RR photos and it don't look bad just by itself.

Guess I'll go see if anything is happening over at Valley Yard.

Beautiful comparison of state of the art railroad technology and the amazingly fascinating geology of the Silver State. Good show and well done!

Yermo (LA&SL) trains were slow Tuesday, at a 10/day rate.  Hopefully it will pick up soon.

but you did get a real nice shot in #3.  Love the strata.

There have been work windows during the day time on the Caliente sub. UP has been holding a lot of trains at Milford, UT from running south. Most trains are running at night in waves. It will be this way for awhile. Tie replacement project.

Thanks for the info Matt. That explains why I have not seen a lot of trains during the day around here.

This is close to Garnet,but with a train.Yes the road is bad. At least I did not get a flat tire this time. Bill Webb

Boy those last two photos show the roadbed really elevated. That track should get some good drainage.

Just for kicks, glad to see the "Pink Heals" folks have made it to this desolate area to paint the rail joiner (fishplate) in the first image!  The only ladies that will ever see it might be a female crew member as few ride the rails anymore, be as a transient or on a passenger train and if so, may God bless them and I pray they never will need breast cancer treatment or be stricken with it.  I've seen green painted joiners but think this is the first pink one.

Now I'll cast my vote for some of the ugliest block signals and apparatus.  I still lke the looks of the ladder and platform like AT&SF had on their semaphores.  At least there the maintainer headed directly to the signal and didn't have to step at a 90˚ angle.  To me these new ladders and supports appear so spindley like as a wet noodle, but I do see they are safety minded with the chain at each platform and it appears the spacing between the platforms might accomodate most people unless they are pro-basketball players, but then, I guess that's what hardhats are for.  Just a personal opinion!
