It's interesting that the UP maintains two separate facilities in the Vegas area. There is local
traffic but it would seem that one yard would suffice.

Valley Yard is north of the strip, and is between range road to the north of Valley with Lamb Blvd to the south. Near Nellis AFB, 215 intersection ( with I-15).
Arden yard is south of the strip off of Blue Diamond road and soon to be Jones Blvd with the move of the yard office to that location late next month.

Valley yard has the oddity of being stub-ended.  The stub-end is also about 25 feet up in the air.  Gives you an idea of the grade the mainline is on when you compare the yard to the main.

Has anything ever been shoved past the bumper post and down the embankment?

You can sure see that feature in the photo - must be for giving the crews hand brake tying practice.

I wonder if the reason for the two small yards was because of the closing of the downtown yard; "we have a few tracks north of town, and a few tracks south of town, so that should work...".  Then later, additional tracks added later at each place.  Does UP still operate a small intermodal facility, I think it was at the Valley yard?  I wonder how much business it gets?

There is a small intermodal ramp, a medium sized auto unloading area and a team track that handles mostly construction materials (rebar & lumber). There is also a cement transfer plant (rail to trucks) belonging to Ashdown Cement and an industril area on the other side of the freeway.

The best I can tell, only the ISCLB and KLBG3 stop at Valley Yard for the intermodal business, both in the early morning hours 0200-0500.  At Thanksgiving, EMD end cab switcher ECRX 7229 switched the facility.  ECRX is Econo-Rail, which is now Trans-Global Solutions.

Bob, is it possible you could post a photo of the Valley intermodal ramp if you can get to it?  I have regular loads into this ramp and the volume has increased.
My trucker operates this ramp, a very nice operation.
