Western Railroad Discussion > Drone Foaming Tunnel 7 and 8 Tehachapi Pass 4/10/15Date: 05/04/15 07:44 Drone Foaming Tunnel 7 and 8 Tehachapi Pass 4/10/15 Author: gjc It's day three of a four day railfan trip to Tehachapi Pass, CA. We're at tunnel 7 looking south towards tunnel 8. I'm with TO members Curt, Cajon92, "Metal" Mike and one of the ranch property owners in the area who was our "tour guide" for the day. I'm flying the drone and TO member Curt has the "track-side" camcorder. Ordinarily getting back to Tunnel 7 and Cliff would involve a long hike however on this day we did have permission from the land owner to not only be on his property but drive in via ranch roads. AWD at minumum was required to get up and over some very steep hills.

private property to get there. And yes, I noticed the Hitchockian touch at the end of the video. Thanks for posting. Nick Tharalson, Marion, IA Date: 05/04/15 09:35 Re: Drone Foaming Tunnel 7 and 8 Tehachapi Pass 4/10/15 Author: wesleygreer Man that is sweet!

Still enjoy when you have a friend on the ground covering different points but realize that may not always be possible. Great video

Date: 05/05/15 04:33 Re: Drone Foaming Tunnel 7 and 8 Tehachapi Pass 4/10/15 Author: dpudave Very impressive. Forgive a dumb question: how much practice or training is needed to fly and retrieve a drone under these circumstances? Thanks.

John Date: 05/05/15 07:12 Re: Drone Foaming Tunnel 7 and 8 Tehachapi Pass 4/10/15 Author: gjc dpudave,
The instructions say to practice a total of four hours without the stabilzer and camera attached. I ended up practicing about 2 hours without the the stabilzer and camera and about 1 hour with them attached over a two week period before heading out to Cajon Pass. To this day I still practice flying it and more so days before I head out to railfan with it. Flying it alone is a ton of fun. dpudave Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Very impressive. George Cataulin San Diego, CA Left Coast Rail Videos Date: 05/05/15 07:22 Re: Drone Foaming Tunnel 7 and 8 Tehachapi Pass 4/10/15 Author: Lackawanna484 There's an article in the business press about legislatures looking at laws on the use of drones flying over private property. Apparently, the "peeping drone" issue has reached legislative interest. There's concern about sensitive facilities like refineries, power plants, water treatment facilities, etc as well as the usual nudist camps, private pools, etc.
Exactly what form this would take is open to discussion. In at least one state (Texas) a drone was shot down by an irate landowner. The local district attorney and the FAA were both involved in that mess. Date: 05/05/15 10:23 Re: Drone Foaming Tunnel 7 and 8 Tehachapi Pass 4/10/15 Author: dlbowen That is an unbelievable view of a forbidden area for most railfans. I was never able to see this area in my 35 years of visiting and photographing Tehachapi Pass. What a high quality video presentation! Thanks for sharing.
