A hike on the old ATSF grade on Ash Hill (Pt. 2)
Author: syscom3

OK, picking up from yesterday. My hike has brought me close to the first cut through the hills, as indicated on my attached overhead view.

Picture 1: Where I am at.

Picture 2: Another view of the westbound intermodal climbing up the east bound "down" track.

Picture 3: I dont know the mechanical term for it, but this looks to be a cable support for something way back when. Power pole maybe?

Picture 4: An old tie.

Picture 5: I was a very short distance east of the grade. I went over to a garbage dump to check things out. Lots of cans of various sizes. And a pipe driven into the ground for a long removed sign?

Picture 6: More.

Picture 7: More detrius of the desert.

Picture 8: More, plus a wooden pole that once was used for something.

Picture 9: OK, back onto the grade and hiking again. On this section, the grade is only a few feet above the desert floor.

Picture 10: Where drainage openings were needed for the small gullies, the construction gang used ties.

Picture 11: At the 'cut".

Picture 12: walking along. I started seeing more remnents of wooden poles after this point. Power or telegraphy or both, take your pick.

Picture 13: There is a drainage tunnel here. Not very large though. I have no idea why they dumped a concerte pier here. A story that will never be known.

Picture 14: Continuing along, more debris laying in the sun, slowly getting eroded by the sand.

Picture 15: Continuing along, I get a look at where the middle bridge would be.

Picture 16: This looked to be a place where a signal stand would have been.

Picture 17: Another view of the ghost bridge.

Picture 18: Another view.

Picture 19: I would have loved to see the bridge structure when it existed.

Picture 20: A nice view of the Ash Hill "hill" I was at last month.

Picture 21: I explored an area east of here and again discovered a dump full of cans. And a post sticking out of the ground.

Picture 22: Another view of the cans and Ash Hill.

Picture 23: Old and new. An MOW makes its way eastward.

Picture 24: Old and new. An eastbound intermodal is heading downhill.

Picture 31: Another place for a signal stand?

Picture 32: Along this part of the grade, there was a small boulder field (on the west side). While exploring it, i found this solitary wooden something sticking out. For what purpose, who knows.

Picture 33: Its hard to see, but theres a fairly deep boulder filled gully in front of me. On the opposite side is where the ATSF dumped a lot of ties. I dont think it was from this old ROW, most probably from the new mains during a replacement project. They sure couldnt do it now. The gully is about 15 feet deep.

Picture 34: An eastbound autorack passes by.

Picture 35: Old and new. An old wooden pole was chopped up and left to rot in the desert.

Picture 36: I saw a lot of these along the ROW from this point. I looked for them and knew a post would be in the middle. Some fo them had shown fire damage. As if someone made a campfire out of them. Maybe the salvage crew?

Anyone got a pre-1923 SFe timetable? Did the
Needles District have signals then?

I'd say upper quadrant US&S Semaphores with ABS. They would be replaced by US&S Tri-lights.

Nice work.

Still trying to figure out how the hell to catch a westbound on Main 2 between West Siberia and East Ash Hill. A lot easier now than it was prior to CTC.

Whats your opinion on the garbage dumps for cans? Some place where the salvage crews made camp?

What about all the posts I found thst were not near the tracks or in a linear row with others?
