Man, How I do miss the Standard Cabs
Author: ns2557

On my way along US30 today, was quietly enjoying the ride, when a headlight appeared to the east. With time available, I decided to stop and shoot what ever was making it's way towards me down the High Iron.  Between Lodgepole and Chappel Ne I found this one. UP SD40N 1680 leading UP SD40N 1591 on a rather long train for what I believe was a local of sorts working west along the UP Main Line. With that small set of "wings" I think these look better now than they did before going in for rebuild and new paint.  Just another day, but not you're average "Wide Nose Units that's so prevalent on today's trains.  I sure do miss these.   Taken May 29 2015 in between Rain and some brief bursts of sun.  TFL,  Ben

Those wings are perfect size for that nose/cab--and you sure shot a nice looking train. Excellent variation from today's modern locos.

Nice shot, looks like it's the North Platte - Sidney local.

I agree... The 'mini wings' are a nice addition to the smaller nose.

This is a very nice photo. About 16 cars back it wants me to write a work order/track warrant
to bring in about 3,000 tons of stone ballast in 30 ballast stone hopper cars,
a ballast regulator,Jordan plow, a tamper alining and lifting machine, track geometry car, highrail trucks with welders.
Too fussy I guess.

Perhaps he wants to smooth out what he feels is a dip at that bottom of that hill

If JJ Hill saw that on his road he would have
screaned at the top of his lungs and had
it leveled to maintain the roadbed along
a level grade.

The least amount of curvature and lowest
grades always win.
