Lawrence Area Trains With Lots Of Variety
Author: BNSF-6432

Unlike BNSF, spending a bunch of time on the UP there not much telling what all you could get, remaining CNW and SP units, GP15s, odd consists and more. For the longest day of the year the McGee family and TTownTrains loaded up early Sunday morning (June 21st) and headed for a 2 day trip to Lawrence, KS. Most of the time was spent out in Midland, Kansas Sunday evening. But from here I'll let the captions do the rest.

1) Train number 1 was an eastbound coal train under the town skyscapper in Lawrence

2) An eastbound from Topeka rounds the curve in Midland, KS bound for Kansas City behind a single SD60, and no DPU

3) From a distance, an eastbound coal train passes the Midland, KS feed store

4) The DPU of an eastbound APL strack train clears one of the county road crossings in Midland

5) Now starting at the levee in Midland, an eastbound oil train with 3 buffer cars travels to KC with a former CNW unit second out

6) With Alex's head at the bottom, (who took on the lazy railfan possition by shooting from a chair) an eastbound with 2 GP15s and an SD60 standard cab lead a train of 152 cars! Needless to say, the GP15s were working their guts out and made enough noise to silence the SD60

7) Sense I took a possition of far back, the rest of the gang shoots another eastbound this time with autos. Can you spot the 3 railfans? ;-)

8) A westbound now shows up with 2 GEs on a stack train passes by the levee before opening it up to 70 mph further west

9) A hot Z train heads for Kansas City slow rolling after catching up to another eastbound

more..

10) Monday we traveled west a little bit, as far as Perry, KS where we see a eastbound coal train by someones field

11) Moday afternoon we see a local moving from one industry to another down a side track in Lawrence, KS

12) Here's a video as a eastbound transfer passes Lawrence with 2 GPs and mostly autos with the exception of one covered hopper

Thanks for looking

What can the KC area folks tell us about the transfer in the video?  We saw the 2 GP60s go west light engines around mid morning.  They had enough time to go to Topeka and come back with the short train in the video.  The previous day's transfer was behind the GP15/GP15/SD60 set, so apparently this is a regular move.  What's the deal???

Thanks.

I'd like to know the answer to that myself. Usally there's a local, that I assume goes from KC to Topeka, early to mid afternoon with some combination of 4-axle power. There's also an EB local that often handles lots of empty auto-racks that runs earlier than the WB. The Y607 is the Lawrence local that comes over from Topeka to switch the chemical plant.

The train in the video looks like the MTPNS. Topeka to NS yard in North KC. The local you talk about early to mid afternoon maybe the LMW63, Muncie-Topeka-Muncie.

Good trip and great photos. The single unit/no DPU would be a neat train to see--like days long ago. Really like the stack train shot leaving town wb. Thanks for showing all these.
