GN 441 at Essex, Montana
Author: JFArrFan

Former Great Northern F-45 441 is seen early in the afternoon of June 23, 2015 at Essex, Montana.  Plinthed, this former locomotive is now a satellite bunkhouse, complete with air conditioning and TV, for the Izaak Walton Inn, seen in the background.

The Izaak Walton is a delightful place to stay.

Love the place, stayed there last August on a motorcycle trip to Glacier Park.

That's not a former GN locomotive.

There's a website describing this ex-Santa Fe locomotive's "long, strange trip:" http://www.gn441.com/history2.html

"Bunkhouse" might be considered a misleading term, as the loco is the inn's priciest luxury accommodation.

Jon, have you stayed there?  I hear it's pretty great, but quite expensive.

It is pricey, but the worst part is the two day minimum. I just couldn't stay two nights, I was on a schedule traveling with others. (Besides, I've slept on it before when it was still in Santa Fe service).
