Spot rates 40FT Container from Shanghai to US
Author: mearsksealand

As per Journal of Commerce July27 2015  the following was the spot rate on July 10 2015 for 40ft equivalent from Shanghai to West Coast,East Coast and to N Europe. These are rates that shipper deals with if he doesn't have a contract with a steamship line or NVOCC--non operating vessel company

To West Coast    $1280

TO East Coast       2812

TO N EUROPE        699

Your major importers also use these rates on containers that are not covered under contract--contracts vary as to amount of containers given to a certain ship line, inland destination and etc. The overflow moves on spot rate basis and in some cases the spot rate might be below the contract rate but the trick is to get booked on a ship with the rate. However if spot rate is low that is an indication of excess capacity.

What routes are typically taken to the East Coast or to Europe?

Are those rates just to the point of unloading ?  Or is that to/from the rail head ?

These spot rates are to US ports only

Routes are Fareast to west coast and east coast thru Panama Canal

Eurpoe is thru Suez

I looked at an ocean route calculator, and it seems the distances from Shanghai to New York (Panama Canal) and Shanghai to Rotterdam (Suez Canal) are about the same, but the spot rate difference is 4:1.  Interesting.

The huge vessels are assigned to the Asia - Europe run. And Europe is in recession.

I am sure port charges factor into that as well.

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) which is a measure of the amout of tonnage raw material moved by ship is at 2009 levels currently, if you want to go back even further 01/02 had this freight volume. 2009 we had ghost fleets, basically the sea version of the deadline on the railroad.

Thanks again for the info!  So "N EUROPE" is Northern Europe?  Like as someone said, Rotterdam?
