Some from Ash Hill
Author: syscom3

After my abortive Cima trip, I headed over to the old stand by area that always has trains. Ash Hill.

These two were at the Rt66 crossing at Amboy. This train must have been shut down until I showed up. When restarted, what a bunch of smoke. Lots of it. I caught the tail end of the start up. It was way worse than what I caught in these two pictures.

So I made it over to Ashill about two hours before sunset. The low sun was on occasion blocked by high altitude clouds so there were some unique photo challanges. Among them was the general uselessness of shooting towards the sun. It just didnt work well. But a bad picture is always better than no picture. So here it is.

The first two pictures are of "old Smokey", the train that I caught at Amboy. I was amazed at how much waste heat was being vented in the exhaust. Too bad additional turbo's cant be emplyed to recover some energy of that exhaust gas.

The bottom picture is what happened when those high altitude clouds moved out of the area and the sun was getting really low in the horizon. One train is coming up. One going down.

Last one. 25 minutes before sunset.

This was some challanging photography conditions that I need to work on. Late afternoon lighting in the harsh desert landscapes.

Next up will be some sunset and twilite photo's.

This time of year, the early morning/late afternoon light is the best.

Some nice shots from truly the wide open spaces.  I really like that seventh  (going away) shot.  Thanks for sharing.

Nice bunch. First I recall seeing open top hoppers used for buffers?
