Snaking up the "SC" Sub
Author: mg8711

This past Sunday, August 2nd "santafe199" picked me up, relieving me from my afternoon boredom and we took off west towards Abilene, KS in hopes of finding trains on the BNSF Strong City Sub, or "SC" Sub for the sake of this thread's title. A friendly message on my phone alerted me to an empty ethanol train leaving Peabody down on the La Junta Sub that would have to make the trip up UP trackage to Lost Springs to get back on home rails. It would be enough time for us to grab a bite to eat and head south. We spotted the train in the trees south of Navarre and Lance pulled one of his patented quick but safe "U" turns and so the chase north after this long black snake of a train began...

1) Our first shot is here at the 1500 Avenue crossing just north (timetable west) of Navarre. The BNSF 7603, Lance, and I are sort of having a reunion here, We've both shot this unit no less than four times.

2&3) We comfortably beat the train to KS Highway 43 on the north side of Enterprise for a quick sequence.

4&5) After waving across the fields to a UP wind turbine train east of town we stopped at Abilene for some gas and snacks yet had ample time to beat the train to Talmage for another sequence, here the "snake" approaches Eden Road.

6) Our next location of attack was Cherokee Road north of Longford. The green board is at the east end of a slow order for the crossing here.

7) We bagged the train a couple times between Miltonvale and Oak Hill, here's the view from Windmill Road

8) Then again further north at N 280th Road

9 & 10) Thanks to the 10 MPH speed restriction through Miltonvale proper we beat the train by about a minute to US Highway 24 and 240th Road.

11) Now storms to the northwest are making their presence felt through filtering the sunshine as the train rolls past Aurora, KS

12 &13) We got the train by seconds again at Huscher, KS as it snaked its way around, down, and up the flowing hills.

14) Mother nature was a bit nicer at Concorida bringing the sun back out long enough to frame the 7603 passing the former Santa Fe depot at Washington St.

15) The sun was all but gone due to the clouds at Kackley. Artsy editing will do...

16) A caboose would've been nice but an airslide hopper brings up the rear of the train passing the elevator in town

17) In true last gasp spirit the train, more than half a mile away has just crossed US Highway 36 north of Courtland as the train isn't too far from a crew change at Superior, NE.

Thanks for looking!

Very nice series of shots! I really like the shots of the trins going through a dip like a big slinky toy. The shot of the clouds building behind the train in the last series is excellent!

Lucas I really loved #15 with the storm clouds in the background. Looks like you boys had a good time.
