Major Fire In Portola, Ca.
Author: LarryB

A large fire is currently burning in downtown Portola, one block from the UP yard and office.  Empty bowling alley and adjacent shops.  FIrefighters from as far away as Quincy (30 miles) are attempting to keep the fire from spreading.  Started around 10:30am.

Stand alone fire not near any other fire.  No cause determined yet.

I looked at Google street view, and noticed it's almost directly across the street from the Pullman House Inn, where I stayed one 4th of July a few years ago.

I checked my recollection with some other folks and it appears there were occupied apartments on the upper floor of the building.  The closed bowling alley was downstairs.

Any threat to the museum property? Or is it far enough away.

About 1/2 mile away.  The bowling alley is / was on the western edge of Old Town.  No threat to the museum, although our volunteers are on higher alert in case it was arson.
