Cornhusker Clouds #3
Author: santafe199

Here’s is a sequence eerily similar to the one in my “Cornhusker Clouds #2” thread. (a link to that thread: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,3832258 ). On the first evening of my recent railfan jog to/thru Nebraska, Wyoming & Colorado I was blessed with a 50 minute span in which I had an incredible western Nebraska sunset for a backdrop. I shot 5 eastbound UP trains in that span. It would have been 6, but I had to get my motel room reservation paid for in nearby Sidney, NE. Or risk losing it. (I heard another horn while getting my room… <:-)

These are the last 2 trains in that 5 train train sequence. Enjoy…

1. UP Colton, NE scene looking west at a headlight which will eventually turn into…

2. …UP 8865 leading a string of eastbound hoppers. The 8865 is moving very s-l-o-w-l-y because it’s on the block of the 5849 up ahead (who is on the block of the 7730 ahead of it), and…

3. … they are ALL about to get clipped by UP 8832 sprinting east with HOT double stacks on the other main.

Just one more…

4. Here’s a desperation shot of the 8832 running around the DP unit of the 8865 at Colton. I’m looking east and am pretty much out of shootable light, at least without a tripod. But I’m a railfan. Shooting on one of the most celebrated main lines on the planet! The basic raw excitement of railfan fun is as strong as ever. It’s just after 9 PM and I’m pushing the envelope of hand-held, digital photography: The ISO is set at 1600 with an exposure at 1/200 second @ f6.3. [R.I.P. Kodachrome] :^/
(All 4 photos were taken in a 6 minute span in Colton, NE on August 14, 2015)

Thanks for looking!

Numbers 1 and 2, especially, are superb in terms of color and content (three of my favorite things - trains, signals, and clouds).  Thanks for posting these!

Thanks James (and everyone else)! I gotta say that was one of the most rewarding 50 minute blocks of time I've ever spent behind a railfan camera! I'm sorry it had to end...
