Utah's Green River and Provo Subdivisions
Author: SF5953

On Monday I decided to give myself a little birthday present. I took the day off work with my first goal to catch Amtrak at Floy. I left my house  at 4 a.m. so I could have a little time to scout out the shot. Unfortunately I couldn't  find the exact shot I was looking for and my time was running out fast. So I got my self in position at MP 539.  I think the location I was trying to find is west of here.
1. Amtrak 195 122 train #6 Floy, Utah 9-28-2015
Next I knew I had a BNSF westbound that was coming as I drove back down the access road and got back to the old highway I saw the BNSF train and hopped out to get a grab shot at this point I heard a horrible hissing sound. I had put a railroad spike threw the tread of my left rear tire.
2. BNSF 6000 6055 CP 9573? Floy, Utah This killed my plans of chasing the BNSF train and I also had hoped to get back to Mounds to catch the dirt train. Instead I headed for Price to see about my tire situation. Passing through Wellington I was happy to see the Utah loading at Savage CV Spur. I was hoping I could get my tire fixed before he got going. After about a hour in a half at Les Swab in Price and a new tire I was read to go again. The Utah had gone by about 10 minutes before I was done. I was able to catch up at Helper and give chase.
3. Utah 5005 6061 6064 5003 5002 at Lynn, Utah. Unfortunately the clouds were going to be a real problem.

4. As I was starring at the Sky at Lynn hoping the sun would pop out no such luck at train time. But I was treated to this nice light prism.
5. Utah 5005 Kyune Goose necks
6. Utah 5005 Kyune tunnels at this point I started just looking for places I might get a chance to have sunlight.

7. Utah 5005 Kyune the train is really struggling to make speed. He is only moving at about 20 miles an hour you can see a crew member in this shot on the second unit trying to keep his power going. The Utah Railway power must be in pretty rough shape. They have 5 unit up front and 6 pushing rated at 3500 hp per unit. and about an 80 car  loaded coal train and are barely doing it. UP runs trains with 2 X 2 at 4400 hp.
8. Utah 5005 Kyune just a little down the road.
9. same spot different look

10. going away
11. Helpers 6060 5004 6062 5001 5006 6063 Kyune
12 and 13 This is the shot that I really wanted. On top of Gilluly, this is the second time I have tried this shot once last year same result as mister cloud got me again but I still like what I was able to squeeze out of it.

The canyon was really overcast now and I decided to end my chase and head back out to the desert to see if the cloud cover might break up out there. It looked a little better out there but not much. I decided to hope for a miracle and try to catch Amtrak 5 at Grassy no such luck it got really dark by the time Amtrak came.
14. I did get this kinda cool sun dog at grassy while cloud watching. So all in all kind of a ruff day, between the tire and the clouds.  But it was fun to get out and chase some trains.

Thanks for looking
Steve Ellis

Great series of shots Steve, despite the tragedy of the spike attacking your tire. Looks like it was a fruitful day.

It looks like it was a good day, if you do not include the tire issues.

I did not get engine numbers today, but it looked like the BNSF/CP power was westbound through Grand Junction about 1 pm on the head end of a manifest.

Nice shots, and congrats on IOTD! The UTAH and Soldier Summit are rising on my list of places to visit sooner rather than later.

Wow, eleven locomotives pulling/pushing that train. A lot of weight on that train. Great pictures and thank you.

Great photos, especially liked the scene at Kyune.  What's the story with the coal hoppers having different material on their lower portions than the tops?

It's a black paint. I think it was supposed to help with freezing. They were delivered pure stainless and the black was added latter.

You had me worried for a moment there...thought the hissing might be a rattlesnake  (maybe the better of two choices).

Twice I've heard that hissing from barbed wire in the sidewall.  Never at a good place either (once the Meadow Valley Wash).  You got a lot of good pictures out of it anyway, good going!
