UP Nampa Sub - Light Power Move
Author: philhoov

This EB light power move came into the UP Nampa, Idaho Yard this past Sunday afternoon.
Not sure of its origin or destination.
Engine numbers were #8508, #8354, #8723, and #7444.
I didn't hang around long enough to notice if there was a crew change and departure to points east.

This power was used on the UHKWGR-21 (Unit train-Hinkle-Wing, OR-Reposition) Putting cars in storage?

Then on light engine move EWGLGD-22 (Engine-Wing, OR-La Grande, OR-Diesel)
Next on another light engine move ELANAH-22 (Engine-La Grande, OR-Nampa, ID-Helper)

And now has departed Nampa heading West on the 2MNPHK-20 (Manifest-N. Platte-Hinkle)

Interesting.
So, they brought it down from Hinkle to power that westbound MNPHK manifest.
Probably another long manifest?
What does that "20" signify on that last move?
Thanks in advance!

It was the 2nd MNPHK that originated on the 20th of the month.

From Coalca- Where is Wing, OR?
Between La Grande and Baker, east of the Blue Mtns.

There are many 50ft. boxcars that have been positioned at La Grande as well as North Powder in the last few days. Various builders; various ancestry; they are all 10 ft doors and new reporting marks of BKTY. lowest mumbers seem to start at 150XXX through 155XXX. Perhaps these units were used in movong thse cars around?   UP has apparently leased all of these cars.

The 20 represents the day the train orginated. That MNPHK orginated from North Platte on Nov 20th.

The "BKTY" Reporting Marks, if I recall correctly are old Katy (MKT) reporting Marks.  I wonder if they are Katy boxcars that have been renumbered, or perhaps, the UP is saving the reporting mark by putting cars into that series.

Yes, the BKTY reporting mark was some sort of Katy/SSW creation. I know of RBLs as well as open top hoppers that had BKTY marks back in the early 90's.  These cars are from many past histroies. Different paint schemes and colors. Old markings are wiped out though.

Were these cars former UP cars or did they come from other roads, shortlines, etc?

Looks mostly like shortline origins to me.  Mostly boxcar red paints, but some yellows, Orange too. I have not looked at build dates but would guess from the late 70s and the Per Diem days. Late Pullman-Standard designs, PC&F, Berwick and  possibly ACF.
