Worlds largest Container Ship in Los Angeles
Author: syscom3

The OC register has a nice slide show of the worlds largest container ship visiting the Port of Los Angeles for the first time. 18,000 TEU which works out to 9000 40' containers. Or, about 45 trains worth. They must have taken the pictures yesterday because the winds have blown all the crap out of the air here and the visibility is great.

I wonder if these mega ships will be able to handle the new locks in Panama?

Photo eight in the slide show really shows the size, as compared to the Evergreen ship docked across the slip.  How long does it take to unload all the boxes?

The Mearsk ship in front of it ain't no ro boat either. Looks a little 'less wide' by a few container rows but very similar design. Note the seperate strutures and the design of the bow and whatever it's called in front of the containers.

No, containerships of this size are too big for even the newer larger Panama Canal. This ship is not the largest by a small amount, and some 20,000 TEU ships are on order. Currently the largest containership is the 18,600 TEU MSC Oliver.

The new locks in Panama will only accomodate a containership of about 10,000 - 11,000 TEU depending on its length and width.

With that much value in one place, I wonder what defensive capabilities these ships have to protect themselves. === === = === JLH

A rough idea- it says they arrived Saturday morning, leaving for Oakland on Wednesday.  It looks like for publicity photos that they stacked only CMA CGM containers on the outside.  If anyone wants to go see it, it's docked at APM Maersk Pier 400.  See Port of LA map-  https://www.portoflosangeles.org/latitude/content/Port_Cargo_Terminal_Map_072013.pdf

The definitely were expecting a lot of good publicity.  Notice they only have their own containers visible all the way around the ship.   The weather definitely cooperated for obtaining great photos.

That bridge is waaaay up there.  Anyone know how far off the ocean surface the bridge normally rests?

Computers and more reliable machinery have come a long way.  To be able to operate a ship that size with only 26 crew members is amazing.

Thanks for sharing the news and the link.

Those ships are actively tracked by their owners. They know where they are at all times. As for modern day pirates; unless they belong to a crime syndicate like what James Bond is up against, no one is going to be able to steal a container.

There is no way that this ship or any other ship like it will ever go through the Panama Canal. This ship can handle 4500 doublestack well cars at 40 foot containers. Just imagine the train that would handle that amount of containers would be around 270.000 feet long.

It would be interesting to know how much effort it took to get all matching boxes on the exterior.   I can hear the "conversations" now between the working folk and marketing......you want WHAT!!!

Here is a link to a WSJ article about piloting this ship in San Fransisco Harbor:  http://www.wsj.com/articles/harbor-pilots-called-to-steer-larger-ships-1451072906  I don't know if you can read it without a sibscription, but it's worth the time to try.  The pilots train using simulators, as there is only a 50ft space on each end of the boat to maneuver.

Also shows how big MAERSK's Pier 400 facility is, the largest in the LA Long Beach Harbor complex. The Evergreen ship across the channel is actually docked at APL's Port of Los Angeles facility. The MAERSK facility is the only one in the port that can load two 8,000 ft trains at once.
I "think" the Hanjin facility can load  one 10,000 ft at once?

King of a misleading title. This is NOT the worlds largest container ship, but it is the largest ship to visit the US.

Spectre does

Even that might be tough to do. Those containers do add bouyancy to the hull.

1)CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin
2) Maersk Edmonton
3) Both ships for width comparison
Taken this morning at Per 400 Port of Los Angeles.
