Oregon Pacific East Portland Division SW-1 on Freight
Author: nomosantafe

I was driving across the Marquam Bridge in SE Portland this afternoon, when I saw the Oregon Pacific SW-1 # 100 heading south past the ORHF building with 3 mechanical reefers.

I got off the freeway and headed south toward the Sellwood District.  I beat the train to Golf Jct on the old Portland Traction (now Oregon Pacific East Portland Division) where the line to Oregon City used to head south.  The East Portland District used to go to Gresham and Estacada, but now only goes to the Milwaukie Industrial Park.  Here are some photod that I took.

Oregon Pacific has a great webpage with lots of historical information and photos.

Is this the switcher that was fitted with dummy trolley poles to trip signal contacts on the trolley wire?  (Like several Pacific Electric diesels.)

This was one of a couple of PT SW1's that were once fitted with trolley poles:

Great to see two old friends! My Uncle Sam sent me on a RT trip to Alaska and I "shot"  100 and 200, both going and coming (July l1956 to July 1958). wag216

Coalca, I don't think that the engineer visible in the first picture is Dick but rather one of his sons.  I can't tell which one because the resolution isn't good enough when the picture is enlarged.

I met this engine 100 regularly on SE Water Avenue on the usually 6:30 AM morning transfer between the SP&S/BN and the "PEP" when I was working the midnight Eastside Job at Portland's Hoyt Street Yard decades ago.  We normally left Hoyt Street Yard and headed over to the east side of the Willamette River around 2:30 AM.  The old-head hogger working at that time was the only one remaining who had worked the interurban service on the traction company.  Eventually the 100 was replaced by engines from (then) joint owners UP and SP.

Amazing shots considering they include EMD cab end switchers, neighborhood branches, boxcars....enjoy it while we can "because it's goin' away and it's never comin' back"

Engineer that day was Craig Samuels with Brian Samuels as Conductor. Pops was going ahead in my truck lining switches and flagging crossings!

Dick Samuels
