It's a Coal Kind of Day...
Author: FrontRangeTrains

Even though the coal business is down a lot, the sight of a coal train is always welcomed. Today, I took advantage of the sunny weather we had and chased a coal empty along BNSF's Front Range Subdivision between Denver and Cheyenne.
  • The Front Range Foothills provide a nice backdrop as BNSF SD70ACe No. 9067 leads coal empties from Hasted, Texas to Buckskin Mine, Wyoming (E HAFBKM 035A) as they approach Monarch Road near Niwot along CO-HWY 119.
  • A puddle of water provides a nice reflection as the same coal train goes through Highland just north of Longmont.
  • The same coal train crosses the Cache La Poudre bridge in Fort Collins.

  • About ten miles south of the Colorado/Wyoming border is a location called Norfolk that is nothing but a grade crossing, a siding, and fields for grazing. Here, BNSF ES44AC No. 5977 leads the Platte River coal load from Antelope Mine, Wyoming (C ATMPRR 056A) as the train approaches the crossing at Norfolk.
  • At Platte River Junction, the coal empty and Platte River coal load met. The Platte River train can be seen slowly making its way onto the spur towards the Power Plant.
  • Looking underneath the cars, the DPU can be seen as the train clears the switch at Platte River Junction where the coal empty can be seen.

  • The Rawhide Power Plant can be seen in the background as the Platte River coal load moves slowly along the spur towards the plant.
  • Down in Loveland, a former Canadian National, now marked for OMLX GP40-2LW No. 9522 works in the Great Western Railway yard.
Thanks for looking!

Beautiful work on a fine spring day.

What prompted BNSF to run this coal empty up the Front Range instead of via Sydney?

Best regards, and thanks in advance,

Rob L.
