Western Railroad Discussion > Manned helpers in MTDate: 05/25/16 11:30 Manned helpers in MT Author: tvh25 Hello, years ago MRL used to run manned helpers over Mullan Pass and others. Has that gone away, in favoor of remote DPU's?

Date: 05/25/16 12:19 Re: Manned helpers in MT Author: fbe The Marias helpers are not like they used to be. The grain and coal trains are set up to be 100% DPU but if they have weak power or lose a unit they will get helpers. Freight trains may have long/short connections or blocks of mtys not suitable for DPU.

The traffic downturn had enabled them to run the trains from Havre or Seattle with enough power to get over Marias and Stevens without dropping or adding power in Weantchee or adding helpers at Whitefish.
