On the Road to Grand Island, NE
Author: twjurgens

Our goal Monday was to get to Grand Island, NE and head north toward Ord in hopes of catching the grain train that we had heard about.  As usual, the trip out from Lincoln was full of distractions.

First shots of the day were at Shelby where we caught the elevator switcher loading cars that NCRC's ADM local would move later in the day.  Power for the ADM local (NCRC 8057 and 8132) was parked at the west end of Shelby yard. Next stop was at Central City where we found NCRC 902 sunning itself in the former BN yard there.

Before we left Central City, UP 7438, 5765, and 4704 came through eastbound with mixed freight. At Chapman, UP 8633 and 8532 were at the head of one of those LOOOONG eastbound manifests.  UP 8642, 7917, 7262, and 6555 were mid-train helpers.  Someday, maybe, I'll try to get a car count on one of these.

Near Grand Island, UP 5919 and 6210 were eastbound with an OMAX coal load headed for the power plant near Nebraska City.   DPU on this train was 5886. At Grand Island, we found UP 4671, 3841, 4842, 4154, and 4844 headed east with mixed freight.  The train was relatively short for all that power.  Maybe some of the units would be dropped off somewhere along the way for a grain or ethanol train?

Great haul! It was a beautiful day to be out. Enjoyed your trip out the Ord as well.

Looks like a great trip--and nice catches of trains and power.

The engine in picture #1 looks interesting. It looks like an SD-9 with non-EMD trucks. Has anyone a clue on its background?

Got this from a friend, Ken Church, who was with me on the trip:  Unit is a model SD18.  Original C&O.  When delivered they had Alco trucks from RSD5 trade ins.  The original numbers were 1800-1818 and were renumbered 7300-7318 prior to retirement.  Only 54 units of this model  built.
