Kingman Morning - Rumble in the Canyon
Author: cinder

Kingman Canyon, AZ yielded this morning westbound intermodal back in May.  The early morning sun also yielded this local resident who came out to "prey".  My grandfather used to refer to a freight train as a "rattler".

Was that a telephoto shot of the rattler?

I was about 8-10 feet away and uphill on my own rock.

Someone should put an end to your miserable arrogant existence? Just extending your thought process to its logical conclusion...

Kill for what reason?  They serve a big part in our enviroment as long as it was not bothering anyone.  OH! maybe railcity was talking about someone else.

Beautiful animal, I always enjoy seeing photos of rattlers.  And man, that thing really blends in with the surrounding rocks in the area, by design of course!

Perfectly adapted to its environment....amazing what a couple of billion years of evolution can achieve! Seeing sights like this is what makes railfanning out west so rewarding. Really nice shots.

Coming across that creature would give one a case of "reptile dysfunction."

Lol! I was out on the Sunset route last year at Cienega Creek near Tuscon, wandering around looking for a good photo vantage point, when i looked down and saw/heard a pretty upset rattler about 2 feet from my left foot. I backed off pretty rapidly and it really did put the willies up me!! If it had been a bit more aggressive or if i'd taken another step i could have been in a lot of trouble. But i know that the rattler got there first, that i'm the visitor to that environment and i'm the one who should show some respect. It's a privelege to see these beautifully adapted wild creatures - just be thoughtful and careful out there and everyone stays happy!

I don't live in the West so  I limit my time there from very late October thru February.  Hot, dry, high sun and snakes are not my thing.

I've been told if you see lizards out, it's warm enough to see snakes.

It only takes one muppet-comment like 'why didn't you kill the snake?' to cock a thread up! That's what happened here. Some people, even when they have nothing worth saying, still insist on making a comment like that...
