BNSF Scenic Sub, Last Sunday 7/17
Author: Rainier_Rails

I've already posted the photos I took yesterday (the 24th), so now I'll post what I saw on the Scenic Sub last Sunday (the 17th), starting at Carkeek Park (MP 10.38), then moving to CP North Portal (MP 1.7).

1) 6:56 PM: A northbound (timetable eastbound) manifest approaches the point on Main 2, behind C44-9W #5188, Warbonnet C44-9W #732, and SD70ACe #9151.

2) 6:56 PM: A view of the back half of the manifest.  There were a large number of CN boxcars on this one.

3) 6:57 PM: The end rounds the point.

8) 7:48 PM: Heading through the S-curve.

9) 7:48 PM: Reflections on the water of Puget Sound.

That's it for what I saw at Carkeek Park.  CP North Portal up next.

10) 8:45 PM: A northbound loaded grain unit on Main 1 is slowing down so the conductor can throw the manual switch at the bottom end of the "D8" siding, which before a track work project several years ago, was the old "GN Main 1".  In that same project, (from the northern absolute signals for CP North Portal north to Balmer Yard), the old "GN Main 2" became the new Main 1, and the old "NP Main" became the new Main 2.  The empty gravel area in the foreground is where the "NP Main" used to be located; the section of said Main from the northern absolute signals of CP North Portal down to where the old "Portal" interlocking tower used to be had been removed some years earlier, and this gravel area had previously been used (also up until several years ago) as additional parking for the Old Spaghetti Factory restaurant behind me.  3 C44-9W's were the power on this grain train: #4432, #4423, and #5178 (DPU).  After throwing the switch, the train entered the "D8" track, pulled forward a little bit, the conductor threw another switch, and the train then entered the siding to the west of the "D8" track, as the "D8" track was already occupied by a UP grain unit.

11) 8:46 PM: The grain unit has now come to a stop so the conductor can throw the "D8" switch.  One of the CP North Portal northern absolute signals for Main 1 can be seen above the radiator fans of the #4423.

12) 8:50 PM: The grain unit had a number of brand new CAI hoppers (with CAIX reporting marks); this example is CAIX #540085.

13) 9:07 PM: The DPU of the BNSF grain unit, #5178, is seen to the west (left) of the power of the UP grain unit, led by C45ACCTE (ES44AC) #5532.

14) 9:48 PM: The southbound #517 Cascades comes through CP North Portal, just a few minutes away from its last stop at King Street Station.
