What used to be the AGBMI (Gibson Yard, Indiana to Milpitas, CA) is now ANPMI, originating in North Platte like the ZNPOA. Don't know how the autoracks go between Gibson Yard and North Platte now. I can only comment as a foamer, but it seems there's a pattern of combining trains, and reducing through trains through North Platte?

Theres now a AGBNP and a AGBNPB between Gibson and North Platte.  It also looks like the IDUSE is no more.  It has been replaced by the KDUNP to North Platte and INPSE to Seattle.  The KSEMN still runs, however.

North Platte is being used as a collector for these new train symbols. Cars from different origins are combined, then sent to one destination.

I'm wondering if this is unique to Northern California bound trains, or it's happening system-wide? I don't think the AGBNP/AGBNPB/KMNNP cars are being sent through the hump yard at North Platte, but how much extra time is being taken as a "collector?" ZNPOA carrying KMNOA boxes are costing the train extra time on the road, about 1 hour at Lathrop for the setout, and maybe another 1-2 hours for the Fresno Sub/Oakland Sub (instead of the shorter Martinez Sub) routing to Oakland.

I need a WWII Enigma machine to decypher this post.

Thanks for the info.

IHB at Gibson does not make as many auto blocks for UP as it used to. UP now has to hump the westbound autos at North Platte, as evidently it has become too difficult to flat switch them at Cheyenne.

Over time, Oakland gets less and less relevant to intermodal traffic. One train each way for all origins/destinations nowadays.

Best regards,

Rob L.

We used to have a near daily auto train across the Blair Cutoff, now maybe three times a week and it
does appear that the Gibson loads have dropped off considerably.

More and more is coming out of Mexico as oposed to Michigan (loading over Gibson and the IHB)

So can one assume then there is no longer a KOAMN?  Has it been combined with another train?

I believe the Marion bound traffic that rides on the KOADU goes on the KSEMN between Dupo and Marion.

And much like North Platte, the San Antonio Intermodal Terminal is now responsible of reblocking a handful of trains between Chicago, Houston, Marion, and New Orleans to points west such as Laredo, Eagle Pass, and Southern California.

A few examples:
ZATLC from Atlanta is now ZATSA.  ZSALC completes the journey to Los Angeles.
KMNLD from Marion is now KMNSA.  ISALD completes the journey to Laredo.
IHOLA from Houston is now IHOSA.  ISALB completes the journey to Long Beach.
There's also a ZYCSA along with the Yard Center - Laredo / Mexico trains.

A relatively new pair of San Antonio - Eagle Pass intermodals, KSAEG / KEGSA, now run consisting of blocks from the aforementioned trains.

KOADUs/KOASCs handle what little remaining marine container business there is going east on the UP out of Oakland via Donner, and most of that is destined to SLC/ Denver. ZNPOAs and the once-weekly IOGOAs handle the remaining marine business coming west.

Sad to see the KMNOAs disappear, as those were once fairly hot trains back in the NUMMI auto plant days a decade ago. Those trains were originally the SLOAZ hotshots back in the 1980s.

The KDUNPs handle blocks of traffic bound for Denver, SLC, Lathrop, Oakland and Seattle.

Thanks for that info! That hints at a "system-wide" change that I was asking about earlier. I ran into the Extra version of the ZSALC (ZSALAX) several months ago.

KMNOA: Intermodal (semi-premium?) - Marion, AR to Oakland, CA
KMNNP: Intermodal (semi-premium?) - Marion, AR to North Platte, NE
ZNPOA: Premium intermodal - North Platte, NE to Oakland, CA

Apparently they run a ZSALCB on Tuesdays with ZSALC all other days. Interesting they ran the X train to LA not LC, but I understand these trains sometimes service both anyway.

As to the systemwide change, guess they gotta do what they gotta do based on traffic levels dropping.

Simple answer is that North Platte use to kill the autoracks (like pickup trucks coming out th ends) when they were switched there years ago.

Autoracks switching was sent to Cheyenne where they didn't kill a single autorack - but work was transferred back to North Platte along with some of the stacks - as they are humping them.

Since some of other traffic is now sent to north Platte, some of the symbols and pick ups and setouts have shifted and symbols changed as noted above.

They are just making longer trains with less crews and more DP power. A few Of these trains are now running three sets of power.

The ZNPOA is a "Z" is name only, and has no real priority. Yesterday's was 175 cars and like most Z trains are not exempt from fuel conservation.

Agreed. The ZNPOAs should be relabeled as KNPOAs or even INPOAs since empty containers are the primary business on the trains. Since those trains do not handle any premium/ltl traffic, really no reason for the Z symbol to be used.
