arrow wedge on the IG4CIX
Author: z-trains

In reference to my son's post about "White Whale in Walnut," the first train of the series with UP 8397 was apparently IG4CIx-22 (thanks to a friendly TO'er for the symbol).  Oddly, this train had an arrow wedge, which is the first time I have ever seen this on anything besides a ZCIG4 or ZG4CI.  Is this a one off or is UP finally expanding this program to other trains?

Thanks,

Paul

The Arrowedges are kept on the CIG4 trains . The train you mention is just an extra on the same corridor . I saw a 2CIG4 that had one the other day. There are eight of them so plenty for at least six trains with two spare . Maybe all eight are in use at the same time?

An Arrowedge for those who haven't seen one.

I've seen several on trains in Kasnas and New Mexico. They are making The rounds - albeit slowly

Does UP do a good job keeping the whole train stacked ?

I ask because every empty hole creates wind drag (just like empty hoppers do).

Usually these trains have stacks on the headend with a mid-train DPU, followed by TOFC.

There was an article posted on the UP website earlier this year about them buying a lot more arrowedges, so maybe it's underway.

What does the "X" on the end of the symbol mean?

Thanks in advance,
