I've read and seen photos of the original line being pulled up as part of the WWII scrap metal drive. I don't know if that covers the entire line bypassed by the Great Salt Lake crossing though or just a segment. Anyway, that would make it roughly 70+ years. Ryan Date: 09/19/16 12:52 Re: Central Pacific's roundhouse in Terrace Author: stash So far I haven't found Terrace on a map. Whereabouts?

Thanks for sharing. Date: 09/19/16 14:17 Re: Central Pacific's roundhouse in Terrace Author: TCnR Very interesting, excellent use of a drone. There's a lot of interesting details to this old line, something I looked into but would like to check into 'one of these days'. It really had been in the middle of no where, with no connections to anywhere.
There is a lot of info about the line on the National Park Service website. http://npshistory.com/handbooks/historical/40/hh40o.htm Also Signor's Salt Lake Division book: http://www.signaturepress.com/signor/SL.html Date: 09/19/16 15:07 Re: Central Pacific's roundhouse in Terrace Author: F40PHR231 BobP Wrote:

I'm still in Utah looking east, so that would be Tangent Peak in the Hogup Mountains, the first range west of the Promontory Mountains. Date: 09/19/16 19:31 Re: Central Pacific's roundhouse in Terrace Author: JDLX Fantastic...I've cruised over that area often in Google Earth. Could get there in a day trip from here, I just need to do it sometime...
As for history, Terrace and Toano (Nevada) were officially consolidated into the new terminal at Montello (NV) in 1905. Though the mainline remained in use for several decades afterwards, the roundhouse and shops and almost all other facilities were gone by that point. By my math, that should be 111 years... Jeff Moore Elko, NV Date: 09/19/16 21:53 Re: Central Pacific's roundhouse in Terrace Author: kilroydiver The book "Un-driving of the golden spike" by Jeff Terry, Thornton Waite, and James Reisdorff covers the history of Promontory as well as the dismantling of the line in 1942.
Dave Date: 09/20/16 00:28 Re: Central Pacific's roundhouse in Terrace Author: atsf121 Things last in the desert for a very long time, great find Chris! And you really were in the middle of nowhere.
Nathan Date: 09/20/16 00:53 Re: Central Pacific's roundhouse in Terrace Author: Pinlifter Its crazy to look and see railroad ties that old in their original place. The remoteness helps preserve the history. Great find and pics!
Date: 09/20/16 04:48 Re: Central Pacific's roundhouse in Terrace Author: twin_star_rocket You can still see much the same at the original site of Sherman, in Wyoming. Turntable pit, outlines of the roundhouse, even the graded track bed. And that was abandoned in the very early 1900s when the new route was surveyed and built.
Brian Ehni Date: 09/20/16 14:06 Re: Central Pacific's roundhouse in Terrace Author: HogheadMike I always love heading down there about once a year to drive the line from Lucin to Corinne. Such solitude down along that line and lots of history all along the way. Thanks for sharing. It was awesome to see terrace from the air and gives a much better perspective of the area. I'm glad to see that someone besides myself actually knows of this place.
