Western Railroad Discussion > Tejon Pass alternate routeDate: 09/25/16 04:01 Tejon Pass alternate route Author: funnelfan Having some fun looking at a possible route over Tejon Pass like ATSF and others have explored. The east approach is straight forward, but the north approach is a big question. Most proposals use the Grapevine in one way or another, but that makes for a short, straight and very steep route. I looked at a route northeast from Castac lake and passing under a low divide into the Bear Trap Canyon. I mapped out a straight 2% grade for fun, but a 1.5% would be workable by going further up the canyon before turning back. Seems that route offers more potenial for easy grades than the Grapevine.

The proposed Calif. HSR system is looking at modern high speed routes. Also, BNSF and the state just paid for extending sidings into double track to increase velocity over the existing route... If some of those could be leveled out a little, I always thought a track down the center of the 5 would suck more riders to trains than any other way.

Tejon Ranch would never allow it. |
