Electricity in the Air
Author: nwkrailfan

I don't think I had ever been so happy to be off duty!

1) With a thunderstorm pushing east into Great Bend two K&O trains sit tied down on old ATSF trackage. WAMX 4034 is parked on the original ATSF mainline through western Kansas while the 3914 and company are in coal chute.

Thanks for looking.

Great photo opportunity, well delivered. And on some historic Santa Fe turf. Very deserving of an IOTD!
A+, all the way:^)

Great image.

A side question, someone refered to this as the original ATSF mainline through western Kansas, what was the route at that time?  Did it go through Newton, where did it diverge to where it is today, when was it changed, etc?  Amazing that such an important route is now relegated to a short line, albeit the K&O are doing a great job......

Thanks,

Dan in Wichita
on the ATSF Arkansas City Subdivision

Oh yeah that was the original main line from Newton to Dodge City before they built a cut off through St John KS, which was the old 2nd District.  This shot was at Great Bend on the old 5th District.  The run from Newton to Dodge City on 2nd district was 153 miles, and on the 5th district it was 164 miles, and it followed the Arkansas River grade.

The picture looks like it's facing west at Main Street, near the Depot.  The storm is in the Southwest, normally where the storms come from.......
