Guess it was a south bound train heading onto the main from the engine lead. Sept 25, 2016 Todd Montgomery Springfield OR Date: 09/25/16 20:45 Re: Derailment at UP Eugene OR yards. Author: Railbaron With all those empties I would suspect it was an inbound train but inbounds usually don't use the Engine Lead. Guess it could have been a CORP train heading south.
Even when I was working I always expected a derailment right there as the track profile had a weird kink where the covered hopper and bunched up cars are. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 09/25/16 20:49 by Railbaron. Date: 09/25/16 22:29 Re: Derailment at UP Eugene OR yards. Author: SP4360 Whoospie

Author: Railbaron According to a "Union Pacific spokesman", who I believe is an MOP in Eugene, the train was being operated by an "automatic" locomotive, which makes it sound like an RCL yard job. If so then I suspect they were shoving those cars onto the Engine Lead, probably building the outbound CORP train.
Date: 09/27/16 11:36 Re: Derailment at UP Eugene OR yards. Author: TCnR Strange choice of words by a spokesman, they may as well be saying the locomotive doesn't have a clutch so it must be an 'automatic'.
