This image was posted on the Boatnerda FACEBOOK page. Are they talking about 15,000 TFEs or 15,000 full size containers? Will these newer ships handle 53' containers?

While I can't be sure, it's my experience they rate the ships based on TEU (twenty foot equivalent units) rather than "containers".  Either way, that is one big flattop!

Are they making 53' international boxes now, or is that still the purvue of domestic boxes?

Has to be TEU or 20ft container units. Largest ships are getting close to 20K TEU or about 9,000 international 40ft containers.

Very little 53' international service. APL tried to promote it, got few takers.

At most places on earth, it is impossible to drive a 53 around. While they dominate North American transportation, they are not very flexible for international trade.

Maersk does move 45 ft containers above deck and have transported 53 ft to USA all above deck these are equipment moves as 53 ft are manufactured in China

These large ships are operated between Europe and Far East

This class is now nowhere near the biggest. the New Maersk M class and vessels operated by MSC and CMA CGM are also clssed as being able to carry between 18000 and 20000 TEU other companies are joining the bandwagon. . The bankruptcy of Hanjin will put at least 7 14000 TEU vessels back on the charter market.

It must operate autonomously because the pic on Wikipedia shows no one on the bridge!!

To give one an idea of how that translates to trains, one 8000' stack train is equivlent to 580 TEU. So it would take twenty six  8000' stack trains to fully handle one 15,000 TEU ship. But that is spread among several ports of call and a large part of the traffic is trucked to locations near the port and transloaded or mixed to order with other shipments.

Savannah is starting to get then15,000 unit ships. But currently having to wait on the high tide window till the river deepening is finished
