UP Installing New Signals Hot Sulphur Springs, CO

Union Pacific has been busy around Granby, Hot Sulphur Springs and Byers Canyon, Colorado, upgrading the signals with new tri-lights this summer.  September 19, 2016 from Amtrak train 5, the westbound California Zephyr, noted the old General Railway Signal (once based in Rochester, New York) signals were being replaced with new tri-light signals.  UP Moffat Tunnel Subdivision, control point (CP) DS086 Sulphur.

Everything between Salt Lake City and Helper has been replaced and activated.

On my trip to Colorado, I noticed UP had begun to replace signals along the entire D&RGW. I will post a photo report soon.

I guess this is progress but I'm sad to see the DRGW searchlight signals go... :-(

Are hooded tri-lights the only signal made these days??  Can you still order circular tri-lights??

Yes. The Type "G" is available. Amtrak uses the LED version.

What is the cost for a signal post? Estimate?

I was quoted for a new H2 (prior to LED) for a single color (IIRC) around $1100. Might have been a little less.

They are NOT light.

Add in freight shipping and I'm sure it's not cheap either.

Now add pole, base, concrete, wiring and costs go up quick for something that is actually simple.

MBTA  and PAR use them.
