Portland and Western More on the Oregon Electric Sub
Author: nomosantafe

My foaming has been limited lately because of my current vehicle project.  I've shared pictures of my 1948 Chevrolet Coupe (The "Foamermobile") and I am currently working on the "Foamer Truck", a 1952 Chevrolet 5 window pick up.  We currently finishing doing a paint job and it is pretty much disassembled, but we are starting to put it back together.   I will share more about it when it is on the road.

I had to go to Lebanon, OR to get a part for the truck and I drove the backroads and followed the Portland and Western Oregon Electric Sub down to Hopmere (just north of Salem).  I chased the Rock Train back to Reed Jct.

Here are the photos I got today.

The Rock Train is a one man operation with power on both ends to eliminate the need to run around the train.

The Oregon Electric heritage is evident here as there are power lines along the ROW all the way from Wilsonville to Salem

It's a 1952 Chevrolet 5 window cab pick up.

My friend Joe (part of the 4449 crew) and I built it in the late 80's.  It has a 69 Chevelle subframe graft with power brakes and power steering,  a 1969 Chevelle 12 bolt rearend, and a small block Chevy  327 and a Turbo 350 Automatic Transmission.  I shipped it to Texas in 1991 when we moved to Houston, and  I drove it cross country from Houston, Texas to Portland, Oregon in 1993.  A move to Ohio later in 1993 necessitaed my selling it to gentleman in Boring, Oregon.

He owned it all through the years and after 2 years of negotiating with him (bugging him) I was able to buy it back in 2015.  It was in great shape (hadn't been licensed since 1997 and stored in a garage)), but needed a paint job (my Earl Scheib paint job in 1991 was getting pretty sad),so Joe and I disassembled it, stripped the paint and had another guy shoot it.

I railfanned all around the Houston area in it.

Here's 3 shots of the "Foamer Truck".

1. In the ATSF yard at Galveston, Texas 1992
2. SP at Lordsburg, NM  Feb 1993
3. SP at Caliente, CA

She sounds good too!  Caught them at Wilsonville on Monday and the train was eased north pending a meet with the last morning WES.  As they heded up the little hill getting out of town, the throttle came out full and the throaty roar fo the SD-9 drowned out all the other noises for a short time.  Brought back lots of memories!

Love the shot 17 at the Reed Pit entrance.  Sure can see the grade heading down into the pit.  Explains why they throttle up the remote unit to help get the loaded train up the hill leaving the pit.  Must make the engineer feel the need for four hands!  Seeing there are 21 car nubmers but only 19 in the trian, did two get damaed/destroyed??   Two views of the train going away from me and the incoming WES movement.
