Union Pacific's last new units....
Author: MrOGDEN

When Union Pacific took delivery of their new units back in the1970s, possibly the early 80s, they were delivered without the stripes or lettering. What was the last units delivered this way?

As I recall I saw a few SD40-2's that came without lettering.

UP used to routinely order units without lettering and striping. The railroad applied Scotchlite reflective lettering and striping to new units in company shops.

In George Cockle's Union Pacific 1977-1980 there are photos of the last order of SD40-2s delivered that way. There was a group of early 3500 series SD40-2s delivered lettered by EMD in early '79 that were lettered. They were easy to spot as the lettering started to peel and there was primer under the lettering. The last orders of SD40-2s were put in service in '79-80 that way as basically B units with no radios, seats and such. I hope to model one some day. They were filthy from winter ops before they were ever lettered.

I saw UP power delivered in 1980 without lettering. New purchases were sparse 1981-84. The MP SD50's and C36-7's, AFAIK, were factory-lettered. TIM
