Video shot at West Siberia along BNSFs Needles Sub, CA on 10/1/16.  I'm flying the drone and good friend and TO member Cajon92 has the trackside camcorder.
I'm flying a DJI Phantom 3 Pro with an IPad Air 2 as my monitor.

Why does this otherwise parallel 2-track mainline diverge at this point, vs. following the line to the left in the final shot?  Does one offer an easier grade?

Correct, the train in the video curves to the right and then later curves to the left to meet the left hand track nearer to the top of Ash Hill. So westbounds climbing the hill usually take the more gentle grade.

Beautiful. Reminds me of my return trip from Sedona a couple of weeks ago. What is the range on that drone?

Though I would never try it: 3 miles in perfect conditions.  Out along the Needles Sub at West Siberia you could probably get that type of range, basically flat with little to no obstructions.

Thanks for that info. I ask because many years ago, flying model airplanes, the range was about a quarter mile or so and I've seen more than one plane get out of range and never seen again.

Not normally a fan of drone railfanning, but this is really above and beyond the others.   Watching the train race the cloud shadows was a lot of fun!   Thanks for sharing!
