Western Railroad Discussion > EclipseDate: 01/07/17 18:38 Eclipse Author: LodiCharley If I was going to Eugene, OR to see the total eclipse of the sun, what lodging would be recommended?
Date: 01/07/17 18:47 Re: Eclipse Author: NYC303 Are you taking the train to get to it? Eugene is a little out of the totality path, Albany or Salem would be better for seeing it. Also, even in August, there can be cloudy days in western Oregon, I'd try to have a plan to go east of the Cascades if I needed to for clear sky.
Date: 01/07/17 19:27 Re: Eclipse Author: CA_Sou_MA_Agent Good luck finding lodging in or near the path of totality that isn't sold out already.
Let me know if you find some. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/07/17 19:28 by CA_Sou_MA_Agent. Date: 01/07/17 19:33 Re: Eclipse Author: CPRR CA_Sou_MA_Agent Wrote:

There are Motel 6 s asking up to $200 for a room. Posted from iPhone Date: 01/07/17 21:27 Re: Eclipse Author: wa4umr Hopkinsville Ky. has been taking request for lodging for over 10 years. Anyplace alog totality is probably gone by now. You might be able to find a place 50-100 miles north or south of the line of totality.
John Date: 01/08/17 00:37 Re: Eclipse Author: SD70M I managed to get a room in North Platte for around £60 on the 21st Aug- I intend to view the eclipse somewhere on the Sandhills sub- hoping for better luck than the last time we had one here in the UK
Date: 01/08/17 06:59 Re: Eclipse Author: mojaveflyer I'm planning on going up to central Wyoming from Denver to shoot it... I heard everything in central Wyoming is sold out with a minimum of a 3 day reservation. Good luck!

It only seems as though it rains or is cloudy all of the time. Date: 01/08/17 10:33 Re: Eclipse Author: mapboy Eclipse totality starts at 10:17 a.m. in Salem, OR. I'd hate to be there waiting for morning clouds to burn off. 8 out of 31 days in August of 2016 that were "cloudy" or "mostly cloudy" days in Salem, per Weather.com. Madras, OR, had 1 "cloudy" day, 0 "mostly cloudy", 4 "partly cloudy" days.

You can easily tent camp with a cheap-o tent in late August on the east side of the state. If it's too hot, just head higher up. Being on Monday, you have the whole weekend to scout your spot. Eastern Oregon is fairly open country with much less trees than the west sude
Date: 01/08/17 12:09 Re: Eclipse Author: Seventyfive I suggest you consider going to the Portland area, which has thousands of hotels and motels, and is not on the totality path.
Then drive to Madras, Oregon to see the eclipse, which will have about the most seconds of totality in Oregon. And if I may recommend viewing equipment, if you have none yet, consider the Lunt Solar Systems 8x32 Sunocular. I received one for Christmas and think it will be just perfect. They cost aroud $130 but they will be yours to use for the entire eclipse;no waiting in lines to use someone else's. Date: 01/08/17 13:19 Re: Eclipse Author: sums007 Seventyfive Wrote:
